Shark Week - If you haven't heard of Discovery Channel's "Shark Week," it is one of television's longest running annual weekly events. Shark Week started in July 1988. It happens to coincide with today's event, in 1945, just over 300 men were picked up as survivors from the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. The ship had been hit three and a half days earlier by Japanese torpedoes after delivering parts for the bomb that would decimate Hiroshima. The sinking of the USS Indianapolis was the largest in US Naval history. The story of this sinking has been featured on Shark Week due to the sharks who picked off the survivors that made it into the water over the course of several days.
