1963 - The infamous Alcatraz prison is closed on this date.  This maximum security prison, in San Francisco Bay, held many famous prisoners during it's 1934-1963 operation.  The Rock, as it was called, was first a military prison before it was turned into a federal prison.  Some of the famous prisoners were Al Capone (aka: Scarface), George Kelly (aka: Machine Gun), and Gangster Alvin Karpowicz (aka: Creepy Karpis), listed as “Public Enemy No. 1″ by the FBI in the 1930.  Today, an estimated 1 million tourists visit the island each year.
