LAST QUARTER OF THE YEAR - Over the last 25 years (1992-2016), the S&P 500 stock index has gained an average of +4.9% (total return) over the final 3 month of the year (October-November-December).  20 of the last 25 fourth quarters (80%) have produced a positive total return gain.  The S&P 500 consists of 500 stocks chosen for market size, liquidity and industry group representation.  It is a market value weighted index with each stock's weight in the index proportionate to its market value (source: BTN Research).
